Why do some people eat a lot without gaining weight?
Share
It is common in society that Many of us know someone who can eat anything in large quantities without gaining much weight—. Why does this phenomenon occur?
First, let's agree that if someone eats but doesn't gain weight, it's not due to magic but rather several factors influencing weight gain or loss. This can be explained by the balance equation between the food intake and the energy expended by the body. If the energy consumed (food) is less than the energy burned by the body, the person's weight will decrease. Conversely, if the body absorbs more energy than it expends, weight will increase. This imbalance can occur if a person either has a poor diet or, despite eating well, their body fails to properly absorb nutrients.
Thinness is not always as desirable as some might think. There's a fine line between being fit and being too thin. Fitness implies a healthy, toned body, whereas excessive thinness can be associated with health issues. To determine if you are at a healthy weight, you can use the Body Mass Index (BMI). This is a simple calculation that considers your weight and height. You can easily find BMI calculators online or through apps on your smartphone. By inputting your weight and height in metric units, you can determine if your weight is healthy. A BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 is considered normal, below 18.5 is underweight, 25 to 29.9 is overweight, and over 30 is obese.
What are the reasons someone might be underweight? These reasons can be categorized into physical and psychological factors. Psychological reasons include depression, which often leads to reduced appetite and weight loss, and severe stress and anxiety, which also contribute to weight loss. Anorexia nervosa, a mental illness characterized by a fear of gaining weight and severe food restriction, is another critical factor. This condition can lead to severe health risks due to extreme weight loss.
Physical reasons for thinness include a high metabolic rate, often caused by hyperthyroidism. Metabolism is the process by which the body breaks down food to extract energy. If the metabolic rate is low, the body burns fewer calories, leading to weight gain as excess food is stored as fat. Conversely, a high metabolic rate means the body burns calories quickly, leaving little to be stored, and may even burn existing fat, contributing to thinness. Thus, metabolism plays a crucial role in determining weight gain or loss.
What is the relationship between the thyroid gland and metabolism? The thyroid gland, a small butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of the neck below the Adam's apple, secretes hormones that regulate metabolism. The main hormones it produces are thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). These hormones affect nearly every cell in the body, regulating the rate at which the body uses fats and carbohydrates, controlling body temperature, heart rate, and protein production.
When the thyroid gland becomes overactive and produces excessive amounts of these hormones, a condition known as hyperthyroidism occurs. This leads to increased metabolism, causing rapid burning of calories, elevated heart rate, and higher body temperature, all of which result in continuous weight loss regardless of food intake—an effect known as unintentional weight loss.
Hyperthyroidism isn't the only factor that affects metabolic rate. Other factors include sex, as males typically have a higher metabolic rate than females, requiring more calories per day. Age, body size, and other variables also play roles in metabolic rate and weight.
Certain diseases can also impact body weight. Temporary weight loss can occur with illnesses like the flu or a fever, but weight typically returns to normal upon recovery. However, some conditions cause permanent weight loss. For example, while many people with diabetes are overweight, some experience significant weight loss due to insulin resistance. Tuberculosis is another disease known for causing weight loss, particularly prevalent in South Africa. Additionally, a lack of digestive enzymes can hinder proper digestion and absorption of food, leading to noticeable weight loss.
